Next month, 20 universities from nine countries will compete in Madrid to construct ‘the most sustainable house possible’ using solar power. Representatives from universities in China, Brazil, US, Finland, Spain and the UK will each build a solar house in the enormous showrooms next to Madrid’s Royal Palace and the River Manzanares.

‘Solar Decathlon’, which is expected to attract more than 100,000 people, has only previously been held in Washington, DC. At every previous event, a significant number of new patents were generated. It has therefore attracted great interest from businesses around the world which have sought to exploit cutting-edge university research into solar power.

The event is being organised by the Polytechnic University of Madrid in collaboration with the Town Hall of Madrid. The Ministry of Housing is contributing EUR5 million (US$6 million) to the costs and the central government a further EUR2.3 million.

During the last year, the UA Corporate Website has improved its results, both at a qualitative and quantitative level, since it keeps increasing it size, it maintains a high level of pages served and it has reached a outstanding position in the main rankings and indicators.

Thus, in the latest edition of the main ranking of universities websites, Webometrics, has positioned the UA website in the eighth position in Spain. This is the best position achieved so far in this ranking. The UA has normally been ranked around the 10th position, which is an excellent position given our own features.

This positive datum is also supported by its maintenance in Google’s PageRank of 8 out of 10. The Complutense University is the only Spanish university with a higher PageRank (9/10).

According to the Vice President for Technology & Educational Innovation, Faraón Llorens, these data are excellent and we expect to keep up this position, although it is higher than expected if we take into account its relatively new creation and medium size. On the other hand, the Vice President for Institutional Relations, Aránzazu Calzada, stataes that the Corporate Website is a key element to organize both the management and communication of the University. Therefore, the results are highly successful due to the daily work performed and the process of improvement and revision carried out by the University of Alicante’s Corporate Web Committee.

University rankings are more and more becoming a key element for the analysis of reality, efficiency and potential of the Spanish University.
